SHOOTING SEASON

CLOSED FOR DUOKS. ~

The action of the authorities in declaring a close season for ducks in this district has occasioned a good deal of protest among sportsmen, who assert that ducks are very plentiful this year. The Helensville Acclimatisation Society took the matter up, and the following communications were the result :—

Hon. Minister Internal Affairs, Wellington. Our branch of Acclimatisation Society here on behalf of Kaipara •portsmen desires to emphatically protest against closing of season for ducks in this district. Native game in these parts increasing every year and exceedingly plentiful now. Action of Auckland body recommending close season done without full investigation. Our delegate at their annual meeting Tuesday last convinced them that quantity native game in this district been misrepresented. Would respectfully bog you rescind previous decision.—Yours etc., C, H. Spinley, Secretary H. A. S.

Hon. J. G. Coates—My Society respectfully beg if you will use your in? fluence on behalf Kaipara aportsmen to endeavour have native game open this season. This Society disgusted with action of Auckland body recommending close season in spite of overwhelming evidence that ducks are more abundant than any previous year. This particular district of Kaipara having endless natural sanctuaries for self preservation of ducks in particular.—Yours eic. C. H. Spinley, Seer etary H. A. S.

Department of Internal Affairs Wellington, 26th April, 1920.

Sir, —I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your telegram of the 23rd inst., protesting against a close season for ducks in the Auckland Acclimatisation district.

In reply, I am directed by the Minister of Internal Affairs to inform you that your representatives have been noted, but it is regretted that the wairant for the shooting season in thiß district having been issued, your request for an open season for ducks this year cannot be granted.
