MAKARAU [OWN CORRESPONDENT] AN entertainment was held in the, Hall on December 15th., in aid of Red Cross Funds. A large committe, of whom Mr T. Hooper was chosen chairman and Mrs E. E. Father Christmas (Mr C. Hooper) j in red robe and cap, who handed^ them to the children. srS|Miss M. Flynn sold a number of lovely button-holes, while Mrs J. McMillan sold sweets, and Mrs E. E. Smith sold fruit. During the evening songs were rendered by the following:—Mrs Bellini, Mrs E. E. Smith, Miss: Elvin, and Messrs Geraghty, Diamond, and Elvin. Mr Kay gave a recitation, and Mr McKay a step dance. All the items were* greatly appreciated, arid a number of encores were given and reponded to. ' ~ ~ Mrs Kay, who told fortunes by cards, was surrounded by an interested group of young people. Great interest centred in thet jumble sale, Mr Elvin being the; auctioneer. The articles for sal*: were many, and ranged from jam, splendid iced cakes and fancywork, to turkeys, lambs and calves. One calf realised £5, and fell to the bid of Mr H. Mather. The following persons generously sent gifts of money or goods : —Mesdames Spinley, C. Hooper, Ranura, C. Manuell, H.Hooper, Flynn, Elvin, Kay, E.E. Smith, J. Hooper, Geraghty, -G. Smith; Misses Marks, Gardner, Poyner, Flynn, Hooper, Elvin, V. G. Paul; Messrs Hooper, Gardner, H. Poynes, Manuell, C. Hooper, Knowles, Monk,. C, Palmer, T. Hooper, Bush, Elvin, Hadrill, and E. E. Smith. If I have omitted any names, it is quite unintentional. The merchants .and tradesmen of Auckland, Helensville, and Kaukapakapa were also very kind, and gave many useful and valuable articles to help the Fund. Buyers were present from Tauhoa, Tahekeroa, and Glorit, besides the local buyers, and the bidding was brisk throughout A .tiny rubber doll was sold andT re-sold till it realised £1 7s 6d. The Makaru Partiotio Committee wish to most heartily thank all those who so willing assisted to make the entertainment a success. During the evening the opportunity was taken to present Private H.
