JOY-RIDERS AND A JOHN
CHINAMAN
ON Monday last as Constable Driscoli was feeding his horse, he espied a couple of youths some 50 yards away, who were apparently having a rest beside two nicelooking Shetland ponies. Accosting the lads a few minutes later he learned that the lads, who were about 14 years Of age, had ridden over from Avondale. They gave certain names and addresses, and other information concerning the ownership of the trotters, which, however, was not satisfactory. Asked where the saddles were, they stated they had left them at home, and were just out on a " joy ride." Not being satisfied with the information forthcoming, Mr Driscoli invited the boys up home for tea, and eventually got them separated, when the cat was let out of the bag, their names being Ernest Ball'and John McLauchlan of Mt. Eden, they had taken the ponies from a paddock at Eden Terrace and the bridles from Hutchinson Bros.' stables.
Eventually the "bad boys'' found accommodation in the lock-up, and were vcharged the next morning before Mr Wm. Ryall Fosbrooke, J.P., with .the thieft of the bridles, and were remanded to Auckland, where Magistrste Frazer ordered the boys cool storage in Industrial Homes and where there are no Shetlands kept on hand.
