HELENSVILLE A. AND P. ASSOCIATION'S SHOW.

RECORD ENTRIES AND

ATTENDANCE

- Though a slight shower fell early in the morning, the day, Monday, January, 29, was aii ideal one for the above Association's Thirteenth Show, and from ; about. 10 o'clock crowds wended their way to the grounds. The special trains from both North and South brought.their quota, . some 300 Aucklanders being amongst them, while quite a number came from Rodney' County andWairoa, and the whole district being well represented, the number present reached well above 2500. During the day a ■ number of visitors took the opportunity to run to the Springs in Stewart's Motqr Lorry which was plying from the Show ground, while Mr Smith's busses were kept busy between the station show grounds and Springs. \ hm/ 1 There was a good show of jfc- horses; draught horses, colts, |V and fillies being of exceptional quality. The farm mare or gelding, class brought out a splendid lot, Mr-R. Nichbll's Bess, getting first sSSPard out of 10 entries. The blood."stock, saddle horses ■ and roadsters also made good sections, while the riding com- ' petitions were well contested, from 6to 10 entries feeing received in each class, the jumping events being especially good. The entries in the cattle division were not large, but some good stock was exhibited. The main feature of this section was the bulls exhibited by Messrs Woodward Bros., the champion Duke being much admired. The fat beast entered by H. Hare, of Three Kings, received a lot of attention, his weight being put down at anything up to 20001bs. Amongst the dairy cows were the prize winners of the best cow for dairy purposes judged by milk test, which was won by Jas. McAdam's Strawberry, Jas. McDonald's being second, and H. Aitkehhead's third, out of 20 entries. Dairy heifers were well represented, as were also store cattle. ' ■,"■'■■

In the sheep classes, J. E. Leach's .(of Wayby) Leicesters and Lincolns showed well, this exhibitor taking the firsts and champions in these classes. J. B. Jordan . secured champion and firsts for Downs, while G. T. Bayley did likewise for Romney Marsh. In the. fat sheep Stintbn Bros, and J. A. Wilson divided the red tickets. " r-

The pigs penned, although not numerous, were good.

The tent exhibits were a splendid lot, and showed a great increase, the entries exceeding any previous year by over 400, while the exhibits showed a marked improvement. The scone classes were exceedingly well filled, in one class alone there were 51 entries, the first, award being secured by Mrs;W. ■--Russell, Taupaki, Mrs Rae being second ; in fact the entries in the cake and bread divisions were very heavy throughout. Needlewoi k also showed an improvement. The Vegetables shown were fair samples, as also the fruit. The flower classes were not well filled, but the table decorations were pretty, and there were some good samples of dahlias and sweet peas. The judges of the different sections carried out their duties in a % manner to give satisfaction to all, and the Association are to be congratulated on being able to secure the services of such capable officials. The commit-' tees generally, and the stewards are to be complimented on the preparation of the grounds, and the attention paid to their different departments. Both the Chairman, Mr X.; Hicholls, and the Secretary, Mr .T. 0./JR,jmmer, /with their helpers, left nothing' that tended in any way jjf; towards the success of the. Show. "There are many improvements that can be made as the affair grows" into > greater magnitude , which it-undoubtedly will, and' becomes .the premier show North .of Auckland, and now that the ground has been secured by the « j&ssociation' these improvements Jfwill no.doubtbe made. "'■'-'' The catering was in the capable hands of Mr Sinclair of Auckland, who, with his army of as sistants satisfied the wants of all. Besides the Auckland Pipe Band of 14 members, which rendered a splendid programme, was McMahon's Circus Band which gave selections between their acts during the afternoon. A number of smaller side shows were also on the ground, and taking all in all visitors should have been satisfied with the afternoon's outing. r Amongst the stands on the ground we iiotiped one of J, Simcock's famous automatic wooden windmills pumping water, J. O- Gardner had his patent rushdigger on view, and in the afternoon gave an exhibition on '■' the ground ; J- F- Lambert had on view several vehicles as mm^

pies of work from his factory; while Bennett and Green had a large selection of pot plants on sale. The dance in the Foresters' Hall in the evening was well attended, and kept going till after midnight to music supplied by Misses Little and DonovanWEIGHT GUESSING.
