Shaw Savill and Albion Company’s steamship Tainui, from New Zealand, arrived at Plymouth yesterday morning. Her cargo of meat is in good condition. The whole of the elections for English borough seats are now completed. The list shows that in the Metropolis 49 Conservatives, 2 Unionists, and 60 Gladstonites are returned. Liberals have been ousted by Conservative candidates at Camberwell, Wood bridge (Suffolk), Pembroke, and Southern Division of Lanarkshire. (Received July 10, 1.15 a.m.) July 9. The state of parties according to the latest returns is—2so Conservatives, 50 Unionists, 131 Gladstonites, and 65 Parnellites. Supporters of Mr Gladstone are returned for Durafiies, and East Fifeshire. Campbell-Bannerman, Secretary for War (Liberal), has been reelected for Stirling. Pender has been defeated for the Wick District. The whole of the English borough elections are now completed. The list shows 144 Conservatives, 22 Unionists, and 60 Gladstonites returned, of which number 49 Conservatives, 2 Unionists, and 11 Gladstonites, have been elected for the metropolitan constituencies. Great preparations are being made for the entertainment of a large party of colonial guests at Portsmouth. A luncheon will be held on board H. M.S. Victory, followed by an exhibition of toi pedo practice. (Received July 9, 8.45 p.m.) Paris, July 8. The death is announced, aged 84, of his Eminence Cardinal Guibert, Archbishop of Paris. [special to press association.] London, July 5. Funds were received from America by the Home Rule party to enable them to contest all the Ulster constituencies. The followers of Mr Gladstone complain of the weakness of the Irish vote in the boroughs. July 6. Mr Gladstone is writing letters daily to the newspapers, which are querulous, arrogant, and almost insulting in their tone. The Parnellites are greatly irritated at the defeat sustained by Mr Gladstone. Patrick Egan has summoned the Irish League Convention to meet in Chicago on August 18th, to discuss Irish affairs. Severe fights have taken place on the frontier between the Turks and Montenegrins. Tlio Spanish Senate have, by a large majority, rejected an amendment opposing the ratification of the Angio-Spanish wine treaty. July 7. The European Press consider that 'Batoum ceasing to be a free port is a prelude to renouncing the Berlin Treaty, and is a blow at England. death is announced of Colonel "Vivian, late Military Commandant at Adelaide. It is expected the Exhibition will be prolonged until December. At the banquet given under the auspices of the Chamber of Commrcee Congress, the Marquis of Lome said that the colonies were England’s best customers in times of peace and the surest allies in times of war.
