At the inquest on the body of John Kennedy, who died suddenly, medical evidence showed that death resulted from a sudden failure of the heart’s action, and the verdict was given accordingly, Kennedy was a traveller for Bing, Harris and Co., and a married man without a family. Captain Rose, manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, met with a slight accident to-day by losing his grasp while ascending from the hold of the Tongariro. The Agent-General cables that the New Zealand Loan of one million and a half fetched an average price of £IOO 6s 3d the amount tendered for at and above par was £5,555,000. The Government have received a message from the Agent-General stating that some 700 tenders have been received for the loan, applying for about £7,000,000. Tenders at £IOO 3s 6d will receive 32 per cent. : above that, in full. It is understood that Mr Pearson member for Ashley, will move, and Mr Hislop, member for Oamaru, will second the Address-in-Reply in the Lower House, and the Hon. Robert Pharazyn and Hon. J. Shephard, of Nelson, will respectively move and second the Ad-dress-in-Reply in the Legislative Council. Dunedin, June 6. At the inquest on John Atkinson, the verdict was “found drowned.” Deceased had been observed fishing by a man at the defence works, having let himself down the face of the cliff, about 150 feet by a clothesline, and had been warned of the danger. He leaves a wife and four children. At the instance of the Official Assignee a warrant has been forwarded to Melbourne for the arrest of Stephen S. Hutcheson, gas engineer. A constable was despatched yesterday to briii" him back. e G. F. Brown, formerly M.P. forTuapeka, died suddenly of heart disease at Lawrence. Yincent Pyke addressed his constituents at Tapanui, and received a vote of confidence. Blenheim, June 8. The billiard-room and skittle alley of the Half-way House Hotel, Kaituna Valley, was destroyed by fire early on Sunday morning. The cause is unknown. The building contents were insured in the Royal for £230. Auckland, June 8. Dunn, the noted burglar, whose sentence amounted to seventeen years’ imprisonment, was arrested on Saturday for disorderly conduct. When arrested ho attempted to draw a revolver on the constable. A quantity of jewellery, supposed to be stolen, was found in his possession. Dunn was discharged from Wellington gaol last January. Christchurch, June 8. Mr John Tinline, of Amuri, who went home in the Tongariro, left £IOOO with Mr G. Harper, of Christchurch, and £I2OO with Mr John Sharp, of
Nelson, to be devoted towards the maintenance of three schools in connection with English literature. Two fatal accidents are reported from the northern district. An old man named Robinson was run over by a horse and buggy, near Rangiora, on Saturday night, and died shortly after. The same evening Miss Wright, daughter of Mr Robert Wright, was thrown from a buggy on the road from Otaki to Kaiapoi, and died in a few hours. Later. At the inquest on tho body of Edmond Robinson, an old man of 70, who was knocked down by a buggy near Rangiora, on Saturday, the evidence showed that W. Chinnery, F. Chinnery, and George Buckman, three young men who were driving in the bnggy. placed the old man, who was insensible, on the side of the road where a horseman could have ridden over him, and then went on two miles to Rangiora to inform the police. They took the horse out of the buggy, and one of them went to get his hair cut before taking any steps to get relief taken to the sufferer. The night was very dark and windy and considerable time elapsed before they returned to the spot with a constable and drove the sufferer to a doctor. The medical evidence showed that deceased died from long-standing congestion of the lungs, and brought to a climax by the shock of the accident. The three young men were severely censured by the Coroner and the jury for the inhuman conduct in leaviug the old man as they had done.
