The election of Mayor for the Borough of Kumara takes place to-morrow. There are only two candidates—Mr D. Hannan (the present Mayor) and Mr H. Burger (several years a Borough Councillor). The poll will be taken at the Town Hall, between 9 a.m. and G p.m. A public meeting of gentlemen interested in the success of the New "Sear's Day pcnic to the school children of Kumara was held in the Town Hall last evening. Barnett, M'Lellan, Gibson, Stephenson, Rudkin, Toms, Brayshaw, Hanna, Home, and N. Sedclon, be the Picnic Committee for this year ; With power to add to their number. A special meeting of the Hospital Committee will be held at the Town Hall this evening. Every member is requested to attend.

We are requested to acknowledge on behalf of the collectors, Messrs Madill, J. Corrigan, and M'Ginty, the receipt of moneys enabling Mr John M'Loughlin to proceed to the East Coast, to undergo an operation for a second time for the removal, if possible, of a cancer from the lower lip. The sufferer proceeded by the coach this morning, and we hope the operation may be successful.

The Clark and Ryman American Comedy Company arrived this afternoon shortly after two o'clock, and to-night will open at the Theatre Royal. Other contemporaries in addition to those we have previously quoted pronounce this company in point of merit to rank with the best they have ever seen on the Coast. This fact should ensure a good attendance to-night. At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, before J. O'Hagan, Esq., J.P., William Hunt was charged with being drunk in Main street, at six o'clock the previous evening. Being an elderly man, with a large family, the BeDch, in fining him, administered a severe caution. Accused was fined ss, and 2s costs of Court, or, in default, ten hours' imprisonment.

The election of County Chairman of Westland for the ensuing year takes place at the Council Chambers, Hokitika, tomorrow, at noon. It is thought that there will not be so many candidates this year as on previous occasions.

We understand the tender of Messrs Cassidy, Binnie and Co., for the mail service between the East and West Coasts for the years 1885 and 1886 has been accepted. The tender of Mr Antonio Brown for the daily carriage of mails between Hokitika and Kumara, leaving Hokitika each afternoon, and leaving Kumara every morning has also been accepted for the year 1885, and the daily mail service between Hokitika and Ross, for the same period, has fallen to Mr John Cameron, the present contractor.
