SHIP ARRIVALS. HURRICANE AND EARTHQUAKE AT SAMOA. THE PHCENIX PARK MURDER INFORMERS. THE STEAM MOTOR QUESTION IN NEW SOUTH WALES. (Received May 22, 2.45 p.m.) Melbourne, May 22. Arrived, the Messageries steamship Natal, from Marseilles, last evening. (Received May 23, 0.45 a.m.) Arrived, this evening, the Orient steamship John Elder, from Plymouth, April 7. News has been received here that a destructive hurricane and earthquake occurred at Samoa on March 24th (?). Many vessels were totally wrecked, and two deaths occurred from drowning. (Received May 23, 12.40 p.m.) May 23. The Premier, the Hon. Jas. Service, has telegraphed to the Agent-General instructing him to protest to the Imperial Government against the proposed deportation of the Phoenix Park informers to Australia. (Received May 21, 2.45 p.m.) Sydney, May 22, Arrived, yesterday, the Waihora, from Auckland. The Government have decided not to stop running steam tramways, pending parliamentary action in the matter. A bill has been prepared to legalise the use of steam motors.
