The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. SATURDAY, JULY 19, 1879.

At the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, before R. J. Seddon, Esq. J.P., Albert Edwards was charged with stabbing Jean Spindleler on the 19th July, with intent to do grievous bodily harm. After some formal evidence the accused was remanded to Tuesday next. In consequence of the Rev. E. A. Scott officiating at Hokitika to-morrow, there will be no service held in Holy Trinity Church here in the morning, but the evening service will be held at the usual hour. Mails for the United Kingdom, etc., via ’Frisco, per s.s. Australia, close at Auckland at noon on Tuesday, the 22r.d inst. Mails for Sydney, per s.s. Rotorua, close at 2 p.m.-ou same day. The meeting held at Dillrnan’s Town last evening to consider the question of railway deviation, restricting Chinese immigration, and the desirability of 1010.1a new County, was very largely attended.

His Worship the Mayor of Kumara occupied the chair, and resolutions affirming the necessity of taking immediate action on the subjects under discussion were unanimously adopted, with the exception of the proposal to form a new Count}' two hands being held up against this resolution. As a meeting for similar purposes takes place here this evening we withhold a full report of last nights proceedings, as we intend to summarise the ‘speeches on both occasions.

, The total cost of the construction of the Hokitika and Greymouth branch railway line is estimated at £221,000, including idle x’ollmg stock, construction of stations, &c. The bridge over the Teremakau, on the upper site, would cost £24,000, and if the lower route were taken, £27,000. The branch line from the Teremakau “if constructed,” is stated at between. £25,000 and £30,000. We give these figures as several of the speakers at the late meetings have laboured under an erroneous impression as to the estimated, cost of this railway. The annual meeting of the subscribers of the Kumara Lterary Institute will be held on Monday evening next, when the balance-sheet and report for the year will be brought up by the Committee. It is earnestly hoped that there will be a good attendance on the occasion, as it speaks little for the intelligence of a large community like this, that an institution of the nature of the Literary Institute should be allowed to collapse for want of public support. ‘ Six of the games in the chess match between twelve of the Lead and twelve of Kumara were finished last evening, four having been won for the Lead and two for Kumara. Messrs Bent, Holst, •Schlichting, and Morgan did -the honours for the Lead, defeating respectively Messrs Wiesner, Toms, Wylde, and Barnett. The Rev. E. A. ‘ Scott and Mr T. Connell did the like honours for Kumara, defeating Messrs Ball and Kennedy. The other six games will be played this evening : these are between Messrs Petrie and Ballantyne, Pearson and Hansen, Home man and Nicholaison, Huxtable and Gill, Johnson and Smart, Janion mid Palmer. During the discussion on the railway deviation on Wednesday evening at Stafford Town, one of the speakers, in referring to the District Engineer, stated in effect that he was under the impression that gentleman have learnt during the time he was in the speaker’s employ, engineering ; but he thought the Engineer’s knowledge might yet be greatly augmented by again becoming a pupil of his former tutor.

We would draw the speccial attention of those persons labouring under an attack of “ Tasmanian fever” to an extract from a journal published in that colony, ana also a letter from a private individual, which appears in our last page, showing that the reported gold discoveries are as imrenumerative as they are unfounded.

Tenders are invited for forming parts of Main and Sedclon streets. Specifications can he seen at the Town Hall, whore tenders close at noon on Thursday next. Messrs C. Kegan Paul and Co. announce for immediate pnblicatian the only poem by .Hr. Alfred Tennyson, entitled “The Lover’s Tale,” which has not hitherto been included among his works. Two only of the three parts have, says the Athenaeum,” been privately circulated, but ilia third is quite unknown. Seeing, however, that these two first parts have of late years been reprinted without his sanction, the author has determined to suffer the whole poem at last to come to light, accompanied with a reprint of the sequel—a work of his mature life—“ The Golden Supper.”

Ms W. Willway having sold his plans and interest in the Dyeing Business to Mr R. Upjohn (who has become practically acquainted with the trade), begs to solicit the kind patronage hitherto afforded him to his successor.—Mrs Upjohn announces that she is prepared to clean anddye hats, feathers, gloves, <fcc., in the best style. N.B.—Gentlemen’s clothes cleaned, dyed, pressed, and repaired on the premises,—tAdvt.
