Direct Telephonic Service
A continuous direct telephonic service will shortly be available between Auckland and Napier, and Auckland and New Plymouth. Tbe chief telegraph engineer, Mr E. A. Sbrimpton, stated to a "New Zealand Herald” representative that, owing to tbe relief afforded on the telegraphic system since tbe installation of the machine printing telegraph between Auckland and Wellington three wonts ego, seyeral wires bad become available for telephonic business, which was an increasing factor. The Postmaster. General, the Hon. J. G.
Coates, bad authorised the conversion of two wires to Taranaki and to Hawkes Bay Into metallic circuits Previously, it bad been possible to speak to either of these places when pressure was off these lines at night, but a continuous service will shortly be available, which should prove a great convenience to Auckland business houses. Long distance telephone facilities from Auckland had been greatly improved. Direct communication with Tauranga, Rotorua and tbe whole of the Bay of Plenty bad been given by a line across tbe Hauraki Plaine, and a great deal of the former delay in getting connections from Auckland to other parts of tbe North Island should now disap pear. The telephonic cable across Cook Strait, tbe laying of which the Department had in view, would finally enable Auckland to talk to Bluff or intermediate stations.
