OUR ROADS (?).
(to the editor.) Sm, —We wa : t quietly in patience until the present Government see fib to honour us with roads to Kawhia j from adjacent settlemente. Native |wd surrounding Kawhia and 'its set- ( Elements is responsible for this. ' Where are we to get settlers to lease these waste native land* without a Surchasing clause ? I a*n a stock- 1 rover and frequently drive stock to Kawhia from Opara-i and other settlements. Krom the Okr.paln-Omanftwa toad to Kawhia the road end? at the Okupata River, at its junction with the Oparau. But them is no bridge I often baye to wait till the tide goes out to cross. From Crotty’s to the Ferry is a down grade, but at the present, owing to the absence of a road I have to climb high cliffs and travel a distance of three miles through high fern and scrub. Mr Soddon boasts of his progressive Government, yet as this road, was in the days of Adam so it Is now. Settlers have to pay 5 per cent per annum rent, but why should this money be extracted from our toiling pioneers when no outlet is given them to the shipping port of Kawhia ? If Mr Beddon is such i. good Premier why does he not help ibose who are increasing our exports and wealth, in stead of town loafers 1 , who would starve if put on an improved section, M they have neither the knowledge, application or grit to m.»k< successful pioneer settlers.—Yours, etc., CHARLES QUIN.
