MANGAPEHI NOTES

TENNIS CLUB OPENING. (Own Correspondent). Though rather overcast, a fine day favoured the official openiung of the Mangapehi Tennis Club's courts, which was held on Saturday afternoon last. After the president, Mr. W. Buck, had welcomed the visitors and Mrs. Buck had served the first ball, the courts were declared open for the 1939-40 season.

For over a fortnight previously, a willing committee and other helpers had worked assiduously in removing grass and weeds, spreading fresh pumice, repainting the lines and other work, and are to be congratulated on the orderly appearance of the courts and surroundings.

St. John Ambulance Social Evening.

On Saturday evening the Mangapehi branch of St. John Ambulance Association held its third social and dance. The programme consisted mainly of dancing, but vocal solos by Mr. Taputahi with guitar accompaniment by Mr. J. Hill, humorous vocal duet by Messrs. D. and A. Cressy, tap dancing by the little Misses Nita and Gladys Zanovitch, and indoor games, were much appreciated. Ample justice was done to the tasty buffet supper which was provided by the ladies, and a very enjoyable evening was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem. Personal Items.
