OLD AGE PENSIONS
POSITION IN BRITAIN. After what was described as a stormy debate, the British Government has decided to investigate without delay the higher old-age pensions. At present the British Widows/ Orphans' and Old Age Contributory Pensions Act of 1936 provides a contributory pensions scheme which is interlocked with the National Health Insurance scheme. Generally, evening’s work, “try to be a little payable for both services together. Contributory old-age pensions are payable to insured persons at the age og 65, and at the rate of 10s a week. This benefit can also be enjoyed by the wives of insured men who have themselves qualified. The pensions under this scheme continue to be received until the age of 70, when they are replaced by non-contributory pensions. In the year 1936, contributory old-age pensioners numbered 782,000. Non-contributory .pensions, payable to all persons from the age of 70 whose private means do not exceed £49 17s 6d (in the case of a single person), or £99 15s (in the case of a married couple living together), vary from 10s to Is tweekly, according to the amount of private means. For example, a single person with a private income of £42 a year would draw each week as an old-age pension the sum of two shillings.
