A few drops of lemon juice added to the butter will help to keep meat sandwiches moist, besides improving the flavour.
To get the best results when fried onions are on the menu, first boil them for two or three minutes, m according to size, before transferring them to the pan.
Piercing peeled potatoes with a sharp instrument such as a fine steel skewer will make them floury when cooked.
Equal parts of raw linseed oil, turpentine, and vinegar make an excellent mixture to remove heat-marks from a table. Rub in vigorously at odd moments day by day. The marks will disappear with perseverance and the task may then be completed with furniture polish.
When scaling fish first scald them and a frequently disagreeable task will not be a worry.
Washing soda sprinkled over live coals will meet the need if it is desired to keep a small fire going during a temporary absence.
If a frock has become stained with lemon juice ammonia applied to the spot will restore the cloth to it natural colour.
It is wise not to wash hearth tiles in the way that you wash a floor. Use turpentine and a soft cloth, and thus avoid the danger of splitting the surface glaze of the tiles.
It is handy to sew a curtain ring on to kitchen towels, overalls, aprons, etc. They can be hung up in a flash. By comparison a tape-loop is an irritating device with which one fumbles.
Cotton gloves should be worn when silver is being polished. They reduce the work by preventing finger-marks and they protect the hands.
To clean a nutmeg grater put it into the oven for four or five minutes. The fragments clinging to it will become dry and brittle, and may then be easily brushed off.
