FIRM TREND FOR BEEF. MUTTON IN DEMAND. At the Westfield fat stock sales on Wednesday under steady competition ox beef showed a firming trend. The top price of £l6 5s for steers was well above the average. Individual prices for the most part were below the highest of last week, which was £ls 7s 6d. Cows and heifers sold steadily, odd pens of prime quality making to £ll 10s. Last week's highest bid was £ll. Mutton met a firm market. Top price for wethers was 31s 3d, compared with the 31s 9d reached at the last sale. Ewes were fractionally higher at 26s 3d. There was a larger entry of lambs and the demand was steady for prime.
Dealers and farmers forwarded large numbers of calves. Values were inclined to ease, except for best quality. Runner prices went to £8 12s 6d, compared with £8 10s before* while the top price for vealers at £6 13s was more than £1 lower than the previous best.
Baconers sold up to £4 lis, equalling the price reached last week. To £3 8s was offered for porkers, the bid being 2s lower than the previous best, while the average remained unchanged at from 8d to B%d per lb. Baconers averaged 6%d to 7d per lb.
