On charges of drunkenness, two first offenders were each fined 10s by Mr. A. Blackman, J.P., in the local Court this morning-.
An early settlement of the chemical manure workers’ strike is possible following a long meeting- yesterday of a disputes committee consisting of representatives of employers and employees set up under the Labour Disputes Investigation Act.
Six new dredges, involving a cost of more than £150,000, are to be added to the fleet at present operating on the West Coast of the South Island, where it is claimed that dredging activity has now established a record for the Dominion. More than £1,000,000 is invested in the various dredging ventures on the “Coast,” and the weekly average production of gold exceeds 12500 z. valued at £IO,OOO. This represents an annual production of £500,000, and it is still expanding-.
