MOKAUITI NOTES

(Own Correspondent). Although Endean’s football team was expected out on Sunday, June 10, the weather 1 was in one ol its worst moods. A cold wind and intermittent showers made conditions very unpleasant, and the local boys didn’t turn out. They got the shock of their lives when the visitors arrived, but good scouting mustered up a team of thirteen players, and both sides playing this number, a splendid game resulted. The teams were as follows: — Endean’s.—Backs: H. Brown, Forsythe, Gannon, Anderson, Christensen, Rewate and Littlewood. Forwards: Girvin, Waiteford, Wiley, Bennet, Skinner and Beere. Mokauiti.—Backs: McFarlane, Signal, G. Opie, Quin, C. Opie, S. Aidride and Dunphy. Forwards: Lyford, Bowick, Pattillo, Shaw, Bowering and Law.

Endean’s dominated the play in the first spell, tries being scored by Forsythe and Littlewood, neither being converted, the score at halftime being Endean’s 6, Mokauiti nil.

Mokauiti changed their tactics in the second half and were a shade unlucky not to make a draw of the match. Shaw scored a good try, which was not converted, and Mokauiti pressed continuously, but the defence was very sound. A fine breakaway by Forsythe looked like a certain score for Endean’s, but a brilliant tackle by Aldridge saved the situation. The game, which was controlled by Mr. C. Opie, senr., ended in favour of Endean’s by 6 points to 3.

A ladies’ basketball team from the same club was defeated by the local girls by 17 to 13, after a very exciting game, played in atrocious weather.

The visiting teams were entertaintained at afternoon tea following the matches. In returning thanks Mr. R. Brown, of Endean’s, expressed his club’s appreciation of Mokauiti’s sportsmanship and hospitality, and said they are looking forward to a return game. Mrs. Grubner (basketball) spoke in a similar strain. Mr. Quin responded for the Rugby players, and Miss V. Dunphy for the basketball players. It is understood that the return matches are already ai’ranged.
