GARDEN COMPETITION

MAYOR’S CUP. MR. W. SWIFT THE WINNER. JUDGE’S DIFFICULT TASK. The chairman of the Otorohanga Town Board, Mr. Fred Phillips, and Mrs. Phillips have now completed the judging for the Te Kuiti Garden Competition for the cup presented by the Mayor, Mr. H. T. Morton. The winner was Mr. William Swift, of Tawhana Street; second, Mr. J. Mrzljak, Te Kumi Road. The work of the judges was by no means easy as the standard was, Mr. Phillips considered, an exceptionally high one and the first eight or nine competitors were all fairly close. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips were particularly impressed by the great neatness and excellent layout of the first and second competitors. Mrs. Phillips stated that she had never seen a better kept garden than Mr. Swift’s. Even the garden tools were all clean and shining.

Points were awarded for the street appearance, the layout of the garden, the flower garden and the vegetable garden. In some cases the competitors having beautiful gardens, lost a considerable number of marks by the unsatisfactory street appearance.

Mrs. Phillips considered that Mr. Mrzljak in particular was to be very highly congratulated on his street appearance. Considering it is on a main highway and subject to much traffic by stock, the street appearance here was exceptionally good and a credit, not only to Railway Town, but to the whole Borough. Several of the flower gardens inspected were of a very high standard and the judges had difficulty in deciding which were the best in this respect.

Mr. and Mrs. Phillips desire to congratulate the winner on his • well merited win. Mr. and Mrs. Swift will hold the Mayor’s Cup for 12 months and will be awarded a .miniature. The prize of £l’s worth of seeds kindly donated by Mr. W. S. Cato, the judges have awarded to Mr. J. Mrzjlak, his being the outstanding vegetable garden in Railway Town.
