SPORTING NOTES
THE OHINEMURI MEETING.
GOOD FIELDS—CLASS HORSES.
(By Glentruin)
Acceptances to hand for events on the first day of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club's Spring Meeting to be held at Paeroa on Saturday and Monday next, are particularly good, there being no lack of numbers, especially in the hack events, while the class of performer engaged is stronger than that usually attracted to a meeting of this size.
The Poland Cup Field.
Nine remain in the field for the principal event on the first day's programme, the Poland Cup Handicap, which is run at eleven furlongs. Heading the list is the veteran King Rey, which showed by his fine effort at Avondale that he is still a force to be reckoned with. Next are Round Up and Kena, with 8.7, and although the former is bound to show up'from, now on, Kena will be preferred on his Avondale running, where the Musketoon horse demonstrated that along distance event is well within the scope of his capabilities. Kena is undoubtedly a much improved horse, and in such form is likely to be a strong favourite should he face the starter on Saturday. Mazir, at 8.1, is in a favourable position in the weights, and as he has had the benefit of a run, he may surprise. However, there are Tikely to be more supporters for both Cheval de Volee and GoldVaals, which pair showed good form at the Avondale meeting. The former, which did not start on the second day, is just about cherry ripe now, and he should be well suited by the track. Of the trio on the minimum Shy would appear to hold the best chance, and if the course should happen to be really dry on the day, the Valkyrian chestnut might be found leading his field home. The early fancies will probably include Kena, Cheval de Volee, Gold Vaals and Shy.
The Flying Handicap.
Thirteen stand their ground in the second leg, the Flying Handicap, and the handicapper's task of finding a top-weight was easy with the speedy Llangollen in the field. This horse finished up last season with a very close second to Hunting Blood at Tauranga. Gay Seton, next on the list with 8.9, won at his last start, and the son of Persis will have to be considered here, as at least half the field will be badly in need of a race. Prince Acre, 8.8, is another with racing condition, a big factor in his favour, and the hardy son of Acre ran a capital race on the first day of the Hunts' Meeting at New Plymouth. Gay Rose, Rona Bay, Royal Dance and Sergia should be all the better for a race, but Alyth is in fine form and likely to be well suited by the turning track. Noitaro, one of last term's good juveniles, will be watched when he parades, as will Mon Acre, which won three hack races in great style last season. Miss Te Koura, Barrister and Little Artist will all have friends on the day. At this stage, those whose chances may be most discussed are Gay Seton, Prince Acre, Alyth, Noitaro and IHo.ni Arce.
