The Patea Harbour Board has not the power to grant a license for the development of the iron sand industry, according to advice received from the Mines Department. The Under-Secretary of Mines, Mr. A. Tyndall, explained in a letter written on April 5 that consideration of the proposed license had been deferred in view of impending legislation. The Iron and. Steel Industry Act provided that only the commissioners appointed should be entitled to mine for iron ore, which included iron sand. It would be clear, therefore, that the license contemplated by the board could not now be issued.
