FARMERS' LOSSES
DISEASE IN STOCK. TAX RELIEF SUGGESTED. APPEAL TO GOVERNMENT. A suggestion that the Government should grant authority to farmers suffering stock losses through facial eczema, or through the Hawke's Bay floods, to make amended income tax returns, was voiced at a meeting of the Wellington central executive of the Farmers' Union. Mr. A. Campbell, who made the suggestion, said that whatever profits the farmers concerned might have made for the 12 months ended March 31 would be wiped out by the huge losses suffered. Mr. D. G. Gordon suggested that, in the event of the Government not conceding the proposal, the farmers should be made aware of the fact that they could obtain permission to make their returns cover a period of 15 months, instead of 12. If that were done, they could set off the losses suffered during the last few months. Mr. L. Hammond stated that, if the proposals were not acceptable, then the Minister might be approached to have the payment of income tax deferred for a period of three years. The meeting adopted Mr. Campbell's suggestion.
