The death is reported of the wellknown Canadian author, the Rev. Dr. Charles William Gordon, better known under his nom de plume of "Ralph Connor."
Sensational evidence regarding the financing of the Fascist Croix de Feu organisation was given by M. Andre Tardieu, a former Prime Minister of France, during the hearing of a libel action.
A Nanking message states that, determined to save Shansi province, the Chinese have launched a counteroffensive in East Shansi, also along the Peking-Hankow railway. In the former they are supported by two crack divisions of the Bth Route Army.
It is understood that there is no change in Japan's policy of opposition to third party intervention in the Sino-Japanese conflict, but-the attitude towards approaches by foreign Powers is held to be another matter, says the Domei New Agency. Official circles contend that China must first be advised by foreign Powers to abandon her anti-Japanese policy.
During his speech on foreign affairs in the House of Commons, Mr. Anthony Eden, Foreign Secretary, in answer to Mr. Lloyd George's argument that non-intervention worked entirely .in favour of the insurgents, remarked: "I think we must admit that one result, though not the aim of the Nyon Conference has been to facilitate the arrival of very large quantities of material in the Spanish Government's waters, and that there have been enormous quantities of material arriving in Spanish Government ports throughout this year."
A message from Cannes states that parents have withdrawn their children and are occupying the school building at Colle-sur-Loup as a protest against the insanitary conditions in which the children study. They have no intention of leaving the building until the repair work has been begun.
Flying the flag of Rear-Admiral Cunningham, H.M.S. Hood, flagship of the battle cruiser squadron in the Mediterranean, is racing at full speed to Barcelona under orders to ascertain from the crew of the Jean Weems, the steamer sunk by rebel seaplanes, the story of the attack. The Government is determined to act immediately if details are confirmed.
The Jerusalem correspondent of the "Daily Herald" reports that British sappers are laying death-traps in the caves of Palestine's "terror triangle," where a big band of Arab extremists is being rounded up.
Twenty new cases of infantile paralysis were reported in Melbourne on Monday. The total is now 690.
