MILITARY DOGS
USE IN GERMANY. Germany can now claim to have some of the world's most intelligent dogs working in the service of the State, says the Berlin correspondent of the London Evening News. In addition to the famous German police dogs, there are now dogs of many breeds being trained for use with the army in a school near Berlin. Whippets are being used in connection with the tank corps for the carrying of messages. The dogs can be sent from behind the lines out into "no man's land," can locate the particular tank to which they are attached, and safely deliver the message. For some complicated feats are daily achieved by the dogs which are trained at the police school, also near Berlin. The big Alsatian policedogs can be told to search a given piece of land for a suspected crim-
inal, and when they find him, either to bark at him, but not to bite him, or to hold on to his clothes, or to bite him hard. The dogs will methodically zig-zag over the area until every corner has been covered. When they get their man they will treat him exactly as they have been told to, with one exception—if the criminal makes the motion of pulling out a revolver the dog will make one quick spring and grab him by the throat.
