HUGE DIVIDENDS

o GREAT RETURN TO GOLD INVESTORS. Johannesburg. During January the gold mines of the Witwatersrand distributed in dividends to shareholders £8,750,000 which together with the June dividends of £8,500,000 will amount to a total distribution for 1936 of £17,250,000. Assuming that the holdings of gold shares in the Union of South Africa are to the holdings of such shares oversea as two is to three in favour of oversea, that would indicate that South African shareholders have benefited in 1936 to the extent of approximately £7,000,000, while oversea investors got over £7,200,000. As many of the developing mines of the Witwatersrand will reach the dividend-paying stage within a few years, the accumulation of benefits to investors in South African gold shares will amount to a substantially larger figure. On the basis of an

annual output of £100,000,000 — which according to many prominent mining men should be reached within a few years time—the Rand should manage an annual dividend pay-out of £25,000,000. Although there seems to be a certain danger of labour shortage, both white and native, it is confidently anticipated that this obstacle will eventually be overcome, and with the ceaseless expansion of the Witwatersrand goldfields, it is virtually certain that in future years there will be work—and plenty of it—for all.
