COMPLIMENTARY SOCIAL TO MR. AND MRS. BROADFOOT.

The meeting convened by the Mayor of Te Awamutu (Mr. G. Spinley) and the Waipa County chairman (Mr. S. C. B. Macky) to consider what steps should be taken to tender a farewell social to Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, M.P. for Waitomo, prior to his departure as a member of the Empire Parliamentary Party attending the Coronation, was held at Te Awamutu on Thursday evening', when there was a representative gathering. The Mayor was voted to the chair.

Mr. Spinley said the idea was to promote a big meeting of well-wish-ers, entirely non-party, to show appreciation of the unflagging attention to all matters for the welfare of the electorate given by Mr. Broadfoot throughout his term of eight and a half years as member for Waitomo. The speaker said Mr. Broadfoot had helped all sections of the electorate, irrespective of party. At the outset there was a motion that the function be entirely nonparty, and Mr. J. L. Callaghan was elected secretary. Reports from Te Kuiti showed that a campaign had been launched there to make some tangible recognition of Mr. Broadfoot's services, the idea being to make a presentation prior to his departure for the Coronation. Already the fund was growing splendidly, and a hope had been expressed that sufficient funds would be forthcoming from Te Awamutu to duplicate Te Kuiti district's contribution. Mr. McVay said he was informed there was also a campaign in progress in the Otorohanga district. At the Te Kuiti meeting the hope had been voiced that each of the three centres named would conduct its own social function and subscription lists. The chairman said he was confident there were very many electors, not necessarily party supporters, who appreciated Mr. Broadfoot's work, and would contribute willingly to a tangible testimonial. The meeting agreed unanimously to promote a function in Te Awamutu in Mr. and Mrs. Broadfoot's honour, and to at once circulate subscription lists in the hope of raising sufficient funds to pay the fare of Mrs. Broadfoot. The following were appointed a central executive (with power to add) to attend to details: Messrs. G. Spinley, S. C. B. Macky. J. T. Johnson, W. McGill, S. Clark, J. Oliphant, and P. D. McVay.
