MAIN ROAD BLOCKED

FLOODS NEAR URUTI. RECEDING TO-DAY. Heavy rain has caused a block on the main highway to New Plymouth this morning. It occurred near Uruti, where water rose until it covered the road to a depth of three feet. Reports received by the Automobile Association anticipated that the water would have receded by this afternoon. Service cars yesterday could not get through, and had to be tranship passengers over to relief cars sent from New Plymouth. No other route to the Taranaki district was available except the central highway Parapara route through to Wanganui—and .many cars were unable to proceed. The only other alternative offering besides that mentioned was the Tangarakau Gorge route through Matiere, but the three miles of clay in the gorge became impassable after the rain. , , . The service car was expected in Te Kuiti at about 4 p.m. but arrived at 2.30 p.m. owing to the floods subsiding quicker than anticipated. When the service car passed 2ft. of water was on the road, but was rapidly subsiding. The driver anticipated no further trouble.
