The Japanese are nothing if not thorough. True to their reputation, they are already on the job in preparation for the 1940 Olympic Games, which are to be held in Tokio, and they evidently intend using every means possible to make - a big success of the great international gathering. Some evidence of this is contained in a Christmas card received by the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association from the Amateur Athletic Federation of Japan. The usual .Christmas greetings are conveyed, and the message, neatly printed, adds that the Japanese authorities hope they will have the pleasure of welcoming New Zealand’s representatives at the Olympic Games in 1940. On the front page of the card is a picture of Fujiyama, and on another page is printed the information that pole vaulting was practised in Japan over a century ago. Accompanying this is a reprint of a picture of 1799, showing children using improvised equipment on the sea shore,
