CORRESPONDENCE

REPLY TO AJAX

(To the Editor.) Sir, —In the 6th February issue of your paper “Ajax” takes me to task regarding my address to a meeting at Owen’s Block recently, a report of which appeared in your issue of the 30th ult., sent in I take it by someone who was in attendance at my very enthusiastic meeting. Your correspondent reflects generally on my ability and intelligence to deal with the matters covered in the report, and does this anonymously under the name of one of the most famous fighters in Greek history! One wonders what twist of mind caused your correspondent to do this. It seems to represent a peculiar and complacent twist of mind to have ignored the obvious in the report; and emphasises the reaction of such a mind to the facts of modern life in general, hence much of his criticism is a criticism of his own “Tory*’ complex. If he is truly a “famous fighter” for that complex, he will be prepared to sign his name to any future correspondence he sends for publication regarding my address. If he does this I shall be more than pleased to reply to every point raised in his letter, amongst which are the following: “Somewhat inconsistent,” “far from the truth,” “repudiating rather than reducing expenditure, “there isn’t a Tory in New Zealand,” “his views on banking are so fantastic” (I did not give them in my address nor did they appear in the report), “passing of the depression in Britain (13,500,000 people there, one in three of the population, having less than 6s a week to spend on food). I am prepared to stand by and prove every statement appearing in the report of my address, and this right in the open, and if your correspondence is prepared to defend his criticism in the same manner, the result may he of some interest to your readers. They are the judges so far as I am concerned. But it is only just and right that your correspondent sign his letters with his own name, and not snipe under a very seemingly misappropriate pseudonym.—l am, etc., JACK JONES. (This letter was crowded out of our last issue.—Editor.)
