BURNT WITH SODIUM
RAGWORTER ON HORSEBACK. As the result of an explosion of sodium chlorate, Lionel Freeman, 21 years of age, a married man, of Matata (Bay of Plenty), suffered severe burns on his hands and face. He had been employed for some weeks on ragwort eradication near Matata. On Monday evening he was on horseback with a man named Peterson, and was carrying a few pounds of sodium wrapped in a sugar bag on the front of his saddle. The sodium suddenly burst into flame, and the explosion caused the horse to bolt. Mr. Freeman was thrown into some fern at the roadside, clear of the burning bag and its contents, but not before he had been badly burned. His coat caught fire, but was smothered by his fall. Mr. Peterson rode for assistance, and the injured man walked a mile and a half to the nearest house. He was taken in a truck to the Whakatane Hospital. His condition yesterday was described as satisfactory.
