MARAKOPA DAIRY CO.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of the Marakopa Dairy Company was held at the Te Anga Hall on the 4th inst. Mr. T. W. Vicary, chairman of directors, presided over a full representation of suppliers and shareholders. The balance sheet disclosed an average payout of 12hd per lb butterfat on an output of 228 tons, the tonnage showing an increase of 16 over the previous season. During the past season the old part of the factory was rebuilt at a cost of £7Ol, thus bringing the factory thoroughly up-to-date; also plant was installed costing £240, the chief item being the vacreator. These expenses were financed per medium of the Sinking Fund Reserve Account scheme.

The number of suppliers for the year showed a small increase. After some discussion, a number of questions having been put and replied to by the chairman, the adoption of the report and balance sheet was carried unanimously on the motion of Mr. C. A. Reeve, seconded by Mr. J. W. Bagge.

The election of directors to fill the vacancies of retiring members resulted in Messrs. W. B. Bowen, G. Gordon and R. Miln being elected. Mr. J. G. Irvine was re-elected auditor.

Mr. Melton, of the Government Grading' Department, who was present in an advisory capacity, addressed the suppliers, stating that the standard of cream supplied was, on the whole, far too low and that a vacreator could not eliminate taints arising l thorugh an imperfect system of milking' and lack of proper cleansing' of plant and utensils, but only those aromatic flavours arising from feed could be lifted by the vacreator. The matter of subsidy to cream suppliers living some distance from cream collecting routes was discussed. A small subsidy on a sliding scale drawn up by Mr. E. Mosley was adopted. Some Maori suppliers sought the assistance of the Company to press for the construction of two miles of access road into Taharoa at a cost estimated to be approximately £2OOO. Mr. E. Phillips pointed out that it was a moot point if the Maoris would pay their rates on the road if they succeeded in getting it. However, it was decided to get into touch with the Government for that purpose. The Ist September being the date of the Jubilee of the Company, the question of a suitable celebration was discussed. Mr. E. Mosley moved that a luncheon be held in the Te Anga hall, but after considerable discussion a motion of Mr. T. Vicary, seconded by Mr. S. Mudie, was carried that a ball be held at Marakopa on September Ist, and on the following night a smoke-o at Te Anga. On behalf of suppliers and shareholders, Mr. M. Kinnane moved, and Mr. R. Fordham seconded, a hearty vote of thanks to the chairman, directors and staff for their valued services to the Company during the past season. This was carried by acclamation and concluded the business.
