TE KUITI BOWLING CLUB

TURNED THE CORNER. PROGRESS DURING SEASON. Substantial progress during the past year was reported at the annual meeting of the Te Kuiti Bowling Club in B. and A.'s Hall on Thursday evening. Thirty-three members of the Club were present and the chairman, Mr. Baddeley, in opening the meeting, commented that this enthusiasm augered well for the coming season. "Many new members have been enrolled, finances placed on a sounder footing, and the social side of the Club's activities has been most enjoyable," stated Mr. Baddeley in his annual report. During the season the Club visited Otorohanga, Taumarunui, Te Awamutu and Putaruru, the most pleasing feature being the renewal of interclub matches with Te Awamutu, he continued. The Club, unfortunately, lost the King Country Cup to Otorohanga, but were successful in regaining the Midland Cup. The one-day tournament was most successful.

The Club competitions were very keenly contested during the season and a new competition for first-year players was inaugurated. The winners of the Club competitions were as follows:

Senior Championship, W. Haines; Handicap Singles, J. Thomas; Handicap Pairs, W. Home and C. A. Weston; Junior. Championship, H. Douglas; First Year Junior Championship, H. Douglas.

During the season the Club house was repaired and painted, and the Committee arranged to have the green levelled and topdressed immediately at the close of the season. This autumn topdressing sho f uld prove far more satisfactory than the usual spring sowing, and the president considered the Club could look forward to a good green for the coming season. In thanking all Club officers and members for their assistance, the president mentioned the work of Mr. Browne in pegging out the green, and Mr. Abbott's work as secretary. "I feel sure that the Club has 'turned the corner,' and we can look forward to the new season with every confidence," concluded the report. The balance sheet showed a turnover of £3BB for the year. The sum of £33 odd had been received from the production of "Reveille," and another £2O from the sale of a mower, but the president anticipated that especially as much money had been spent in preparation for the coming season, the non-recurring expenditure of last year would just about equal these sums.

Mr. T. O'Connell congratulated the president on the excellent result, but held that new members were desirable.

Election of Officers.

The election of officers resulted as follows:

Patron: Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, M.P. President: Mr. S. Baddeley. Vice-presidents: Messrs. W. Home and W. Haines.

Executive Committee: Messrs. S. F, Wilson,'R. Abbott, N. C Matthew, H. G. Shakes and J. W. Thomas. Auditor: Mr. S. F. Wilson.

Coach of new players: Mr.W.Jones. Mr. T. O'Connell suggested that a presidents' board should be installed, and Mr. Home that the Club champions should also be recorded in this way. Mr. J. B. McLeod thought he "might be able to find a little figured rimu" for the board, and was thanked for his offer.

Votes of thanks were carried expressing the Club's appreciation of the work of the secretary and auditor, and Messrs. W. Jones and N. B. Lusk for their interest in the green.

In proposing the vote of thanks to Mr. Baddeley, Mr. T. O'Connell said the president had been solely responsible in bringing the "Reveille" to Te Kuiti, and this alone spoke volumes for his initiative in working for the Club's interests.

When returning thanks Mr. Baddeley suggested that as soon as finances permitted, the electric lights to permit of night playing should be installed again. Mr. Shakes read a list of probable new members, this being supplemented by the president and others until in the aggregate quite an imposing total was reached.

A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the enthusiastic meeting, and afterwards indoor bowls were played. Supper was served later in the evening.
