Fluttering at half-mast recently over the Native Land Court buildings was a replica of the historic Moutoa flag. It was flown as a mark of respect to the passing of a Maori chief, Rangipo Mete Kingi, who died at Putiki on June 30. The Moutoa flag was presented to the Maoris of Wanganui by the women of the early township, and was an appreciation of the part played by the Putiki warriors in repelling the invading Huahau natives, who threatened the town. A battle was fought at Moutoa in about 1865, and the Wanganui fighting men were the recipients of the original flag. This ensign is still in existence, but is in a dilapidated condition. Its replica is kept at the Native Land Court and flown on special occasions.
