VANIKORO ISLAND
After six years on the island of Vanikoro, in the Santa Cruz group, during which time he did not see a motor car, a picture theatre, or eat little else but tinned food, Mr Donald Whitford has come to Sydney to be married (says The Sun). His bride is a Sydney girl, who will . accompany him back to the island. She will be the fourth woman on the island. “There are only about 30 white people on Vanikoro now,” said Mr Whitford .to-day. “Most of them are employed by a timber company, but there are a few radio men and a doctor. The rest of the population are natives.” According to Mr Whitford, the only amusements on the island are the • radio and pig hunting. Until just before Christmas the residents had also been able to read, but now their books have gone; a hurricane swept the library away.
