RAILWAY TRAFFIC
TIMBER’S LARGE RISE.
ACTIVITY IN LIME TRADE.
An increase in outward revenue of £3319 is noted in local railways goods returns for the four lunar months ending July 18th, as compared with the corresponding period last year, while passenger revenue has increased by £577. The percentage increase, taking these two items together, is over 16 per cent. Timber and lime are the greatest factors in the advance which has been made. Though it was considered that not far off the maximum output of timber was achieved some time ago, the figures of railings are going steadily upwards each month. For the four months the railings have risen by over a million superficial feet as compared with last year, a huge amount when it is considered that at that time the mills were busy. It may be that there has been a rush to fulfil orders before a rise in prices, but as yet there are no signs of a slackening off. For the first month of the period the lime traffic slumped badly, owing to the season deterring farmers from applying lime. Since then, however, the traffic in lime has bounded up well above that of last year; and the deficiency of about 2000 tons was practically made up in the following month, and this increase has been more than maintained. Thus the goods tonnage, which is most affected by lime, is 3312 above the corresponding period’s railings. Cattle and sheep railings show small increases.
Passenger traffic shows one of the largest increases recorded in recent years—23Bß more passengers were carried and the revenue increased by £577 for the four months.
The following table compares the outward traffic from the Te Kuiti railway station for the four months ended July 18th with the corresponding period of last year:—
