TAKEN TO TASK

BISHOP OF WAIKATO.

REMARKS IN ENGLAND.

Strong criticism of remarks reported to have been made in England during the present visit of the Bishop of Waikato, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Cherrington, concerning the "heathen coni dition of the Maoris in the Waikato and King Country," was voiced at a meeting of the Methodist Maori Synod in Auckland on Thursday. "The Bishop does not know the King Country Maori conditions as his Church has little to do with the Maoris there, and he should be silent where the Methodist Church is doing all. the work to uplift the people," said one speaker. The Bishop favoured hotels in the King Country, but both the Methodist and Ratana Churches were unanimously of the opinion that hotels there would ruin the Maoris.

Synod agreed with Dr. Cherrington concerning the need for more money to help to develop the Gospel in the Waikato and King Country, but added that there was a great need for nursing and medical attention, also religious and moral education among the Maoris.
