PRODUCTION OF LAND.

HUGE PASTURE ACREAGE,

According to figures published in the current Journal of Agriculture, the Waitomo County contains 274,577 acres of pasture land, 5216 acres of land under annual crops, and 4717 acres of pasture land cut for hay or ensilage. This supports 21,409 dairy cows, 54 976 cattle of other types, 281,085 sheep and 7287 pigs. These figures were taken from 1933-34 Agricultural and Pastoral statistics.

The area of grazing land is far greater than that of any other County in the Central Plateau and Western Upland regions. Taumarunui comes next with 99,527 acres of pasture land, and Kawhia follows with 19,237 acres. These are the only counties near Waitomo which were mentioned.
