BOROUGH COUNCIL
THE ENGINEER'S REPORT. The following report for the month of • June was presented by the Borough Engineer, Mr. B. J. Drake, to the meeting of the Council held last evening. Street Maintenance: Consistent street maintenance work has been carried out during the month. Rangitoto Road has taken the staff a week to renovate and is now in good order. Tonga Street has been renovated in part, two more chains requiring com- • pletion. Footpaths: The following footpaths have been renovated and top-dressed: Taupiri Street from King Street to Sheridan Street (east side); portion of Seddon Street, Hinerangi Street,
and Te Kumi Road from railway crossing to culvert. George Street has been renovated only. Water: Several leaks of a minor nature have occurred and been repaired. Three old water services have been renewed during the month and two new services installed. The change over from the old pipe line to the new, which was laid at the slip area, has been carried out. A leak had already occurred in the old line prior to the change over. A strip of floor was tried with a rendering of cement mortar. This has proved successful and the whole floor has now been treated. The finished work has greatly improved the floor, which is now in excellent condition. Labour and material for this work cost £lO 4s. The material for the concreting of sheep yard is available and the work will be commenced as soon as the weather clears.
Shingle: Scooping operations to date netted a total of 160 c.yds. of shingle. No further scooping will be required for some time v as a considerable bank of excellent shingle is now 1 obtainable from the Borough reserve in Te Kuiti Road. As this is pit shingle, the supply may be obtained during all weathers independent of the state of the river. Carroll-Tawhana Street Sewerage: The work of laying the earthenware pipe sewer in King Street, Carroll ' Street-Tawhana Street area has been ' commenced. Although weather con- ' ditions were adverse it was not found expedient to further delay this work. ! Good progress is being made, however, and unless the weather gets ' very much worse, the work will be proceeded with. I Plantation Reserves: The plantation trees at the Viaduct and reservoir
are in excellent condition. With reference to the reservoir plantation, an area of approximately 1% acres remains yet to be planted. If trees have to be purchased, the total cost of planting including unemployed labour would be £22 10s. If suitable trees are still available from the Government Department as formerly, this cost would be reduced by £6. It is very desirable that this remaining area be planted so as to complete the whole of the waterworks area. During planting operations fire belts can be attended to at the same time so than transplantion costs would be the same.
