SPECULATION RIFE

GUARANTED PRICE.

WILL IT BE REVEALED?

The five hundred delegates attending the annual conference of the National Dairy Association at Hastings anxiously awaited the speech of the Minister of Marketing (the Hon. W. Nash) when he opened the conference yesterday afternoon. Speculation is rife as to whether Mr. Nash will reveal the secret of what the guaranteed price for dairy produce is to be.

Apparently some tidings have been brought from Wellington that it is the Minister’s intention to announce the price at the conference, but whether this is pure rumour or whether it has some foundation in fact is unknown.

A section of dairy farmers feels that it is unlikely Mr. Nash will do more than deal with generalities. They say they would be surprised if the Government announced the price at the present stage with butter round about 112 s a cwt. on the London market. However, the matter is is in the Government’s hands and dairy farmers are anxiously awaiting Mr. Nash’s speech. The annual meeting of the National Dairy Association, Limited, was held yesterday morning but this was not open to the press. The conference opened at 2.30 p.m. In opening the conference Mr. Nash said the price to be received by dairy farmers would be better than that received during the last twelve months and the twelve months prior to that.
