KEEP WINDSCREEN CLEAN.
A matter which often receives little attention, but which nevertheless is important, is to keep the windscreen wiper operating efficiently at all times. In view of the weather’s fickleness this applies just as much to the summer as to the winter. On many cars the wiper arm does not function efficiently. Possibly this is due in the first place to the fact that electric or vacuum screen wipers must be fitted with a wiper arm so light as not to absorb much power, and the result is that the slightest knock (such as it might receive accidentally when the owner is polishing the windscreen) will derange it to the point where the rubber does not make proper contact with the glass and produce a well wiped arc when operating. A wiper arm which only wipes at the top or bottom or at both limits of its sweep, leaving a smear on the glass in the centre, will interfere dangerously with driving vision. It can be adjusted quite simply, however, by a process of bending and experiment. The point to be observed is that the rubber should not bear heavily on the glass—just sufficiently to wipe it well and allow the arm to tilt slightly as it is designed to do, at the end of each stroke. It should press evenly against the glass throughout its entire travel. It is possible to buy spare blades of different kinds, each of which can be fitted to any screen wiper.
