CLEARING OF STREETS
OCCUPIERS AND NOXIOUS WEEDS DRIVE AGAINST OFFENDERS. A drive against property occupiers to enforce their responsibility of clearing noxious weeds to the centre of the road is planned by the Borough Council. A motion was carried last evening that steps be taken to see that the Borough is cleared of blackberry and noxious weeds, and that notice be given to prosecute offenders. Cr. Douglas voiced the opinion of the Council that something must be done, thought quite a few “might be very upset.” The discussion arose as a result of a recommendation from the Works Committee to commence the clearing and grubbing of the footpaths of blackberry, etc., and that scheme 5 labour be utilised in this direction. The Mayor said the owners of property along the footpaths were liable to do this work, and the action contemplated would create a bad precedent. The ranger would have to understand that prosecutions must be taken. Cr. Low agreed that it was up to occupiers to deal with blackberry.Cr. Isaac suggested a big clean up and a field day in the Court. The clause in the Works Committee’s report was deleted, and the motion mentioned above carried.
