Prior to the League Council meeting a huge cardboard effigy of John Bull, believed to have been constructed by local humorists, was conveyed in a float past the League building, towing a coffin. The effigy’s stomach represented the world, the Italian flag flew from the waistcoat pocket, and a Swiss flag flew from the mouth.
