Taking advantage of perfect weather and early moonlight, Mrs. Mollison took off at 9 p.m. (summer time) on Saturday in her attempt to beat “Tommy” Rose’s record on the homeward flight from Capetown to England. She is taking the east coast route and hopes to reach London at 11 p.m. on Wednesday.

Thirty people are reported to have been killed, including two women, and more than 100 others to have been wounded in street fighting in Salonika. The trouble followed extension of a strike of 25,000 tobacco workers to the whole of Macedonia.

Jewish and Arab antipathy in Palestine is attributable to the greatincrease of Jewish population since the war. The News-Chronicle says that powerful Arabs who are leading a countryside strike have issued a categorical demand for cessation of Jewish immigration, and also threaten non-payment of taxes as a . political weapon.

Italy has formally notified the League of Nations of . the annexation of Abyssinia, and will deliver copies of the decrees to M. Avenol, Secre-tary-General.

The Abyssinian situation is the principal subject on the agenda for the League Council meeting at Geneva, over which Mr. Anthony Eden will preside. The attitude to be taken by the British delegation at the League meeting will be left in the hands of the British representatives, but, as stated by Mr. Anthony Eden in the House of Commons’ debate on Wednesday last, Britain will play her part in whatever action is decided upon, but it must be collective action.

Haile Silassie, whom the Texas Centenary Exhibition Committee is offering £20,000 for a fortnight’s attendance and £30,000 for a month, went to church with his suite on Sunday morning. The National- Federation of Labour in Spain, the most formidable political force, numbering 3,500,000, has decided to establish Soviets throughout the country with the collaboration of trade unions and anarchists, indicating the early realisation of Communism.

Lieutenant-Colonel Aizawa was sentenced to death at Tokyo for the murder of Major-General Nagata, who was shot in his own'rooms at the War Office late last year.

The British cruisers Orion and Leander have been-ordered to proceed to Tangier owing to a general strike which followed a demand for an eight hours’ day in the International Concession.

Viscount Cecil, in his'speech at the League of Nations’ Union’s meeting in the Albert Hall on Friday, said that Abyssinia was still a member of the League and entitled to the joint protection she had been promised. He said he had heard with impatience that the duty of the League toward Abyssinia was finished.

The Geneva correspondent of the Times states that the Little Entente, the Balkan Entente, the French and Danube Powers are all very perturbed about Italy’s future intentions, both in Abyssinia and Europe. The annexation of Abyssinia has had greater repercussions than the Italian leaders expected.

It is presumed that Baron Aloisi, Italy’s representative at the meeting of the League Council at Geneva, will deny the right of Mi'. Waldi Marian, Abyssinian Minister to France, to be present. He is expected to claim that he alone represents Abyssinia, and he will probably walk out of the meeting’.

A mesage from Tacoma, Washington, states that William Mahan, in the Federal Court, pleaded guilty to kidnapping George Weyerhaeuser, son of a wealthy lumber family. Mahan was sentenced to 60 years’ imprisonment.

“‘Up and down New Zealand Tooley Street has constantly been attacked," said Mr. J. T. Martin, vice-president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, in a luncheon address on reciprocal trade in Auckland. “But there has been no reply from Tooley Street'. It has stood there, solid and unmoved. People should bear in mind that during the depression there was not a single dairy factory in Australia or New Zealand let down to the extent of one pound—every ton of cheese and butter from- Australia and New Zealand found its home. The English marketing of butter and cheese has received the approval of some of the best-known men in the Dominion and the Commonwealth. If the people who criticised Tooley Street had an opportunity of seeing for- themselves the channels of trade and methods of marketing there they would speak of it in a totally different manner,”
