DUCHESS'S SHEET

WORN AS SURPLICE BY CLERGYMAN A cassock made from a royal dress and a surplice which originated from a royal sheet are the vestments sometimes worn in the pulpit by the Rev. Li. N. Forse, Rector of Tarleton, Preston, England. These were made for him under peculiar circumstances. While a prisoner of war in Germany, in the Black Forest, he was visited by the Duchess of Baden-Baden, mother of Prince Max. She was horrified at the tattered condition of his uniform, and next day she sent the Court tailor to make him a cassock. Suitable mateiial was not available so he brought a merino dress, which was eventually fashioned into a vestment. A sheet from the Duchess’s household served the purpose for the surplice. '
