CHINESE EFFORTS

VALUE OF ADVERTISING. In giving an instance of Chinese recognition of the value of advertising, Commissioner Turner told the following story at Oamaru the other night. A European opened a restaurant in a certain city in China, and put up a signboard with the wellknown words, “Meals at all hours.’’ Noticing this sign, the proprietor of a Chinese restaurant nearby erected a signboard with the words, “Open all night.” Not to be outdone, however, a second Chinese res-taurant-keeper further along the street put out a sign with the words, “We \yakee, too.”
