PIO PIO SPORTS

VERY SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE. HORSE EVENTS POPULAR. The Pio Pio Sports Club's meeting yesterday was a highly successful one. The beautiful weather that has favoured such fixtures this Easter attracted a large crowd to the meeting—the gates were about £lO up on last year. Probably the most successful feature of the meeting was the horse events; entries were good both as regards quality and quantity, and the judge, Mr. W. Brown, of Cambridge, commented on the high standard that is being maintained in the horse events at the Pio Pio sports. The winner of the Open Hunters' Cup was Mr. Nolan, with his horse Barney. Mr. O'Malley carried off the Open Steeplechase Cup, and Miss P. Houghton the cup presented for the Pony Jump. The steer-riding is now as popular among the riders as it is among the competitors, which is perhaps saying a great deal, but no less than 26 competitors entered for this competition. Evidently there had been some practice in the art, for many riders gave excellent exhibitions and held on for a long period even to the most contrary of steers. The winner was Mr. I. Davidson. The tug of war attracted several entries and Mr. A. Eketones' team was successful. Some good races were seen in the running events, in which J. Collins, J. Stranger, D. McKenzie, G. Johnson and J. Hamlin figured prominently in the final results, arid the points prize was shared by J. Stranger, J. Collins and L. Cullen. The chopping events attracted keen interest throughout the day. Takiari, C. Coffin and E. Benton were successful in gaining places in both the open chops, the first-named having a very successful day, while W. Mills was successful in winning the maiden event." Dancing attracted many entries, the judge being Mr. G. Stronach. The winner of the sheep-weight guessing competition was Mr. R. Hill, his estimate of 1471b5, being, the correct weight.
