The work in connection with the dismantling of the short railway tunnel, just south of the Mercer railway station, is proceeding satisfactorily, and it is expected that the work will be completed by June. The tunnel will be reformed into a cutting. The work is being done by a gang of 30 relief workers under railway gangers. No difficulty is being found in disposing of the soil, as the Public Works Department, which is undertaking the work, is building a bridge across the Maungatawhiri stream, north of Mercer. The department requires 25,000 yards of spoil for this undertaking and 16,000 yards will be taken from the tunnel job.
