ENGINEER'S REPORT. | The following report for the month of March was presented by the engineer, Mr.. R. H. Browne, to the monthly meeting of ' the Waitomo County Council on Monday:— Tenders. —Tenders have been invited for maintenance metal on Pio PioMangaohae . highway and for HakuPuketiti roads. Contracts Completed.—The metalling of Wall's Road has been satisfactorily completed. Contracts Proceeding. HauturuPutake Road metalling is about halffinished and should be completed in a fortnight's time. Wet weather has retarded the progress of this work. The.contractor for Ellis Road metalling is now making better progress and the work should be completed
within three weeks. Tiki Tiki Road metalling is proceeding satisfactorily.
The erection of surfaceman's cottage at Tangitu is being proceeded with.
The painting of surfacemen's cottages is being carried out. Government Grants. Application has been made prior to the 31st March for monies due in regard to completed works and in some cases for progress payments to the value of 75 per cent, of completed work; these amounts have been paid by the Treasury Department.
Motor, Grader.—During the month of March the grader worked on the following roads: —Mokau Valley Road, 5'% days (2% days' road work); Taumatamaire Road, 2% days (1 day's road work); Wall's Road (grant), 5% days; Pio Pio-Mangaohae Highway, days; Pio Pio-Wairere Highway, 5 hours; Te Kumi-Mangaohae Highway, 1% days; Boddie's Road, 2%
days; " Tumu Tumu Road, 1% days; Waitomo Valley Lower, 5% days (2 days' road work); Hangatiki-Caves Highway, 2% days. Total, 29 % days. Aria Riding.—Hand railings on several bridges have been painted. Repairs have been carried out to small bridge on Potaka Road. Instructions have been issued to surfacemen to attend to Kie Kie Road. Maintenance metal is required on this road. Awakino Riding.—Three sets of pipe culverts to replace decayed box culverts are required on Manganui Road, near Waikawau. An inspection with Cr. Jones was made over por- , tion of the riding, including the Te i Marama Road metalling.
Hangatiki Riding.—Surfacemen have given attention to the spreading of metal on Hauturu-Putake Road contract. Attention has been given to Rangitoto Road. Maintenance metal has been placed in Ahoroa-Tapairu Road. Maintenance metal is required
on Rangitoto and Ahoroa Roads. It i was decided to proceed with the work recommended. Mahoenui Riding. Maintenance metal has been placed on Papakauri Road. Mangaorongo Road is being improved by cutting back fern and overhanging scrub. An inspection was made with Cr. Roberts of Ngatarawa Road. Mairoa Riding.—Surfacemen have attended to general maintenance. Improvements have been effected to Boddie's Road and Tumu Tumu Road with grader. Maintenance metal is required on portions of Te KumiMangaohae highway. Paemako Riding.—General surfacing has been attended to and surfacemen have also been employed in spreading metal on contract works. Maintenance metal is required on Pio PioWairere highway and on Kahuwera Road. Cr. Neal moved that steps be taken to open a new quarry, and the
engineer was instructed to look into the matter.
Tangitu Riding.—Kakara Road has received attention. Brake's Road, Tangitu, requires pumicing over clay portions. Pipes are required on Ellis Road to take the place of decayed culvert, 40ft. of 18in. diameter pipes being necessary. Timber and ironwork for Ramaroa Road bridges should be on the bridge sites within two weeks.
Te Kuiti Riding.—Repairs have been carried out on Te Kuiti-Puketutu-Kopaki Road to the value of about £SO; several days' work are still required near Puketutu. Maintenance metal is required on Pukerimu Hill, also on Nohonoa Road. Tiki Tiki Road requires pumicing. Mahorehore Road requires attention.
