When an aeroplane he was piloting over the Marylands Airport crashed and burst into flames, Alex. Gilpin, aged 24, a member of the Daily News literary staff, was badly injured and burned. Watchers saw the machine on fire as Gilpin struggled from the cockpit. He was handicapped by a broken leg and fell back into the flames, but rescuers dragged him to safety.
