APPROACHES TO BRIDGES.
. During the last few weeks there has been an abnormal number of motor car fatalities on bridges throughout the Dominion, several being recorded in the King Country, and the position calls for some actionThis matter came up for discussion at the meeting of the King Country Central Amalgamated Settlers' Association, and the suggestion put forward to have the approaches to bridges more clearly defined by white posts or limestone blocks is well Worthy of consideration. This method of defining the approaches to bridges has been introduced in the Taranaki and Wellington districts, and the fact that very few such mishaps have been recorded in both would go to prove that these guides have been very effective. Many of the bridges between Auckland and New Plymouth are on acute bends and when the visibility is bad, they are potential sources of danger to motorists. The cost of marking the roads in this way would be infinitesimal to the Highways Board, which could act in cooperation with the Automobile Association. In • some parts of . the Wellington district white painted rocks are placed along the two edges of the road, but in this district we have . limestone which should prove equally effective and at a lower cost. The white painted posts, however, are the most effective. It is to be hoped that some action at least will be taken to obviate the danger of the approaches to bridges, and also to place warnings near the acute bends in the road. The heavy toll of motoring fatalities in recent times surely calls for such action.
