AROUND THE COUNTY

ENGINEER'S REPORT. The following report was submitted by the Waitomo County Engineer, Mr. R. H. Browne, to the monthly meeting of the Council yesterday:— Caterpillar Tractor: This machine has been re-assembled for the purpose of using same in conjunction with crushing plant. Aria Riding: Metal has been placed on Aria-Mokauiti, Kumara, Totoro, Potaka, Kie Kie, Wairere-Aria and Kohua Roads. A large washout on the Paraheka Road, leading to Mr. Swainson's, was inspected in company with the Ohura County Engineer, and application has been made for a flood damage grant to repair the damage. The matter is in the hands of the Ohura County. Surfacemen attended to temporary repairs to bridge on Waitewhenua Road. Awakino Riding: An inspection was made of Awakau, Mokau River and Mokau Township Roads, and Briscoe Street, Awakino, by Cr. Jones and myself, and arrangements made to place metal where urgently required. Mr. Clifton's request to plant trees adjoining Mokau River Road was also gone into an.d it was agreed same would Hot interfere with road. Improvements to Manganui Road by No. 4 Camp men is steadily being carried on, six men now being employed. Application for two extra men has been made. " Several box culverts on the Manganui Road have collapsed and pipes to replace same were ordered. Surfaceman was instructed to metal various bad places on Manganui Road. Waikawau Lower Road is to receive attention by metal patching weak places. Hangatiki Riding: Mangarino Road is receiving attention a'nd a washout on the hill below Mr. Boddie's is being repaired and willows planted. The Ahoroa Road near borough boundary has subsided for about a chain in length;- temporary repairs have been carried out, and the road will be brought back to original grade as soon as weather conditions permit. Repairs to culvert have been attended to on the upper end of Hauturu-

Putake Road. Rangitoto Road is being kept in good order.

Mahoenui Riding: Usual maintenance on Awakino Valley Upper, Ma'ngaorongo and Papakauri Roads has been attended to.

Mairoa Riding: Metal has been placed, under contract, on Pungarehu, Mairoa and portion of Te Kumi highway near Mairoa; further metalling is to be carried out on Trooper's Road—some of the worst places having already been attended to. Surfacemen have been kept busy in removing small slips from off practically every road in tre riding. Fullerton's Road slipped away on the outer side near Mr. Tat', am's; temporary repairs have bean effected. Metal patching is necessary on Waipapa and Boddie's Roads. Surfaceman J. Diver, stationed at Waitanguru, has been off work during the past month owing to an accident to his hand whilst employed at slip on Mahcenui-Kawhia Road. Urgent work on his read is being attended to by casual labour. Paemako Riding: The metalling of Mairoa and Mangaotaki Roads by contractor is now completed and surfaceman have been attending to usual maintenance and assisting with Kahuwera Bridge repairs. The Kahuwera Road bridge over the Mokau River is very unsafe, and it will be necessary to drive a set of three hardwood piles in the centre of the river to take the weight of present structure. This procedure will permit of the p;esent bridge lasting a further two to three years. The cost of this work will amount to about £45. The urgency of the work was referred to Cr. Neal and it was decided to order piles immediately. Trooper's Road is now ver'jK) much improved since grading operations and the necessary maintenance metal will be placed as soon as weather conditions permit. Metal is especially required between Early's quarry and Mr. Stevens' gateway, and at various points from there to near Mr. Cleaver's residence, approximately 100 c.yds of metal being required over the full length. Metal patchingis being attended to on the Kiritehere Road. Approximately 1% chains of new footpath fronting Mr. J. Anderson's property at Pio Pio, is necessary.

Tangitu Riding: Numerous slips and subsidences have occurred on Takiri Road and repairs are being carried out sufficiently to keep the road open. Mokauiti N. Road leading to Mr. Wigg's, has been put in good order. Mcßeth's Road has received attention and is now in good order in regard to slips and watertables —a few loads of metal are required for weak places. Patoto Road is being made passable for horse traffic, a washout and slips having blocked same. Kakara Road has received attention regarding watertables and numerous slips. Repairs to bridge approach on Ramaroa Road is being attended to. The necessary survey for new bridge near Mokauiti P.O. has been carried out and plans for same, for the approval of the Public Works Department, will be made at an early date. Ellis Road between Mangapeehi and coalmine is receiving the attention of the Coal Company. Portion of the 60 c.yds of metal has been placed on road. It is necessary that the balance be , placed immediately and the Company has been advised to that effect. Tapauae Road repairs have been carried out.

Te Kuiti Riding: Attention has been given to Pukerimu and Waitete Roads. Instructions have been issued to surfaceman to attend to Pukenui and Mangatea Roads. Mangaokewa Road is in fair order. Waipa River Road requires slight- attention; arrangements are being made to have same attended to.
